Celebrating the birth of Jesus Mum
We visited a few little towns between Seville and Evora. It is now Monday the 9th Sept and we have arrived in Evora, Portugal.
Cadiz, architecture reflects some of the past
The first thing that happened today, as we left our hotel to board the bus, was witnessing a "religious" procession that was passing by the hotel.
It was interesting to see one of these, as the Spanish appear to be into religion in a big way, and celebrating various events on the christian calendar, is something that is just part of their culture now. This one was for the Virgin Mary's birth.

World's biggest weather vane !!
Tio Pepe (Uncle Joe) Sherry
Eventually got to the bus, and an hour or so later arrived in the port town of Cadiz on the Mediterranean coast. Cadiz is the oldest, continually inhabited town in Spain and was first established in 1104 BC. It obviously has an amazing history of various people groups coming and going over the centuries, as do most of the places that we have visited here.
World's longest surviving Roman bridge
We then moved on to a local producer of Sherry, for a look around the winery and have a little tasting. The winery was very nice, but not that keen on the sherry. Tio Pepe (or in English Üncle Joe") boasts the largest working weather vane in the world.
Castle in "Marble Town"
Next stop was the town of Merida founded in 25 BC (relatively new !!) by Cesar Augustus to accommodate retired army soldiers. Merida has the longest surviving Roman bridge in the world, which we walked over, well to the half way point at least. Merida apparently become one of the most important cities in the Roman empire, defending the western side of the Empire.
We then finally entered into Portugal and visited a medieval "marble town", of Estremoz, before finally arriving at Evora where we will be staying two nights.
